Corporate bank account in Rwanda, for foreign founders
A bank file that a Kigali compliance team understands on first reading
We choose the bank that fits your flows, build the KYC and source-of-funds file it reads, and plan any visit it asks for into one working day. You end up with a complete application in the bank's hands, a briefing on the RWF rule and a tested route for capital in and dividends out.
- One bank chosen for your owners, currencies and counterparties
- A source-of-funds memo with the documents behind it
- Pricing templates checked against the RWF rule before the first invoice
Scope
What we do for you
The account, the konti ya banki (bank account), is opened by the bank under its own rules. Our work is to put a file in front of it that answers its questions before they are asked.
- Bank selectionWe match the bank to where the money comes from, which currencies you invoice in, and whether you trade with Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania or the DR Congo, where sister banks simplify collections.
- Currency set-upAn RWF account for salaries, tax and local suppliers, and usually a US dollar account for export receipts, capital and shareholder loans. Euro availability differs by bank, so we confirm it first.
- KYC fileORG certificate, memorandum, TIN, directors and shareholders, a board resolution naming signatories and limits, passports and proof of address for every signatory and beneficial owner at 25% or more.
- Corporate shareholdersCertified incorporation documents, the shareholder register and a structure chart down to the natural persons, legalised or apostilled as your country requires.
- Source-of-funds memoWhere the share capital and first-year funding come from, traced to salary, a business sale, dividends or a regulated loan, with the statements that show it.
- Business descriptionActivity, expected monthly volumes, counterparties and countries, worded the same way as the ORG registration and any investment certificate.
- One-visit planningSome banks open from documents. Others want to meet a signatory once. We plan the bank, the accountant and the resident director into a single working day.
- FX rules briefingBNR Regulation 42/2022, amended by Regulation 89/2025, explained for your model, with a review of the website, quotation template and standard contract.
- Payment routesA test payment before the capital, the purpose wording on the transfer and the document chain the bank will want before a dividend leaves.

Process
How it works
Four steps. Each bank sets its own pace and makes its own decision, so we give no opening timeline and no promise of approval. We do tell you which parts of your file are likely to draw questions.
- Within 2 working days
Review and quote
You tell us the owners, the funding and the flows. We reply with the bank we would approach first, what it is likely to ask and our fixed fee in writing.
- Set by your documents
File assembly
We list every document, confirm the accepted legalisation form for your country and draft the resolution, description and source-of-funds memo.
- Set by the bank
Submission and questions
The file goes to one bank at a time, prepared for that bank. We answer its compliance questions with you and plan the visit if one is needed.
- Once the account is open
Test payment and routes
A small test transfer confirms the details and the correspondent chain. Then the capital, with the purpose clearly stated.
The capital is the Umujyi wa Kigali (City of Kigali), and distances are short. We keep meetings off the last Saturday morning of the month, when umuganda (monthly community work) pauses most businesses and traffic.

The question that slows most files is rarely about the Rwandan company. It is about the holding above it. If your shares sit in a company in a jurisdiction the bank sees rarely, give the bank that company's accounts and ownership papers before it asks.
Comparison
Doing it yourself, or with us
Rwandan banks are well regulated and cautious with clients they do not understand. The work is making yourself understood.
| Task | On your own | With Voixa |
|---|---|---|
| Choosing the bank | Nine banks with different appetites for Gulf, CIS and multi-layer structures. Sending to three at once multiplies the questions. | One bank chosen for your file, then a second only if needed. |
| Source of funds | "Own funds" in one line does not trace the money. | A short memo and the three or four documents that prove it. |
| Documents from abroad | German documents need legalisation; UAE and Qatar documents too. Banks may add their own standards. | Accepted form confirmed with the bank before you order copies. |
| Pricing to Rwandan clients | A dollar quote to a Kigali client can cost RWF 5 million on a first breach, RWF 10 million on repeat. | Templates reviewed, and BNR authorisation applied for where the model needs it. |
| Sending the capital | Rwanda is outside SEPA. Euro transfers go by SWIFT through correspondents. | Test payment, purpose wording and the credit advice kept for later repatriation. |
| Dividends out | The bank wants a resolution, approved accounts, proof of withholding and often a current tax clearance. | Withholding paid first, clearance requested next, transfer last. |

Profiles
Who this is for
Three illustrative profiles. None of them is a client.
A European subsidiary
A German or Dutch parent funding a Kigali company by SWIFT from its own account. A clean file, where the work is legalisation and the RWF set-up.
Read the bank guide → AmafarangaA Russian-speaking founder in Dubai
Russian passport, UAE residence, money in a UAE account. A heavier file that opens when the payment route and the origin of funds are clear.
Read the CIS founders guide → UmusoroA group planning dividends
A parent that will take one dividend a year and charge a service fee. The account is set up with the outward chain in mind from day one.
Read profit repatriation →Where the money comes from changes what the bank asks. Several Russian banks have no SWIFT access under EU measures since March 2022, so most Russian-speaking founders pay from an account outside Russia in their own name, and Russian residents notify the tax authority of a foreign account within one month. A Kazakh resident registers a capital contract above USD 500,000 with the National Bank before paying. A UAE company sends its trade licence, accounts and a bank letter. We do not structure payments to avoid sanctions or reporting, and we decline files that ask for it.

Questions
What founders ask before they sign
What will this cost?
Our fee is fixed and quoted in writing within two working days. Bank charges, minimum balances and any deposit conditions are set by each bank, and we confirm them with the bank we recommend before you sign anything.
How long does it take to open the account?
Each bank sets its own pace, and it depends mostly on how complete the ownership and source-of-funds documents are. We do not quote a timeline we cannot control.
Can you guarantee the account will be opened?
No one can. The decision belongs to the bank and its compliance team. What we control is the quality of the file, the choice of bank and the answers to its questions.
Do I have to travel to Kigali?
It depends on the bank. Some open from documents; others ask a signatory to come once. When a visit is needed, we plan it into one working day, and every nationality can get a visa on arrival.
What if the bank declines?
We look at the reason the bank gives, fix what can be fixed and approach a better-suited bank with a file prepared for it.
Can I invoice Rwandan clients in dollars?
Not without BNR authorisation. Domestic transactions are priced and settled in RWF. Invoices to clients abroad may be in foreign currency, and export earnings are expected back in Rwanda within three months of shipment.
Can we work in Russian?
Yes. Advice is in English and Russian, which helps when home-country currency control and the Rwandan file have to tell the same story. Bank documents are in English.
Can profits be sent abroad later?
Yes. Article 12 of Law N° 006/2021 guarantees repatriation of capital, profits, loan principal and interest, and liquidation proceeds after tax. Dividends bear 15% withholding, or less under one of the 13 treaties in force, such as 7.5% for a qualifying UAE company (see Rwanda's double tax treaties).
